AI-first
A slogan for companies that want AI at the center of how they work. Without changes to workflows and operating model it tends to produce licences and pilots, not transformation.
"AI-first" is the ambition many leadership teams announce: the business should become built around AI rather than merely using it. It usually triggers a familiar set of moves. Licences are bought, a portfolio of pilots is launched, AI literacy training is rolled out and every function is asked for use cases.
All of that is movement, and little of it is a change in how the company operates. When the label is applied to adoption instead of design, it can become another way of installing new intelligence inside old operating models.
Making it real
The test of an AI-first claim is structural: which workflows, decisions and roles are different because AI exists? That is the territory of AI transformation, not of AI adoption metrics. Count the number of AI pilots that other teams have reproduced, not only the number started.

Related terms
AI adoption
How widely an organization's people use AI tools — licences, active users, use cases. It is rising faster than enterprise value, because adoption is not the same as changing how the work gets done.
AI transformation
Changing how a company works — its workflows, decisions and operating model — around what AI makes possible, rather than adding AI tools to existing processes.
AI pilot
A limited trial of an AI use case to test whether it works in practice. A pilot proves one team can succeed; capability starts when others can reproduce the result.
